Dear Friends,
I write you after one of the most eventful and consequential legislative sessions of my career, and one sure to be remembered as historic. A new group of colleagues and a new governor tackled some of the biggest issues facing our state and took decisive action. In addition to raising the minimum wage, protecting women’s healthcare access, creating the most progressive and socially conscious cannabis legalization framework in the country and bringing income and tax relief to average Illinoisans, I also put forth several important maternal mortality initiatives with State Representative Mary Flowers.
Protecting families of color in the face of rising maternal and infant mortality

We have seen studies that show a college-educated black woman in a high-paying career is more likely to die as a consequence of childbirth than a white woman without a high school diploma. As infant and maternal mortality have risen in our country, this is a stark reminder that they are even worse for families of color. That’s why I sponsored a package of legislation in the Senate addressing the many factors leading to this problem.
